Thời gian trôi qua thật nhanh! Mới ngày nào còn bé xíu, giờ An đã ba tuổi rồi!
Nhân dip sinh nhật con, chúng mình quyết định sửa phòng An thêm lần nữa. Căn phòng sẽ nhiều màu sắc, hợp với lứa tuổi của con hơn. Và đồng thời vẫn sẽ phù hợp và có thể sử dụng được lâu dài cho tới khi An lớn. Mất ba tuần lao động chăm chỉ để hoàn thành phòng cho An. Căn phòng mình dành nhiều tâm huyết và tốn công sức nhất từ trước tới giờ!
As a mother of a three-year-old, I'm constantly looking back and can't believe how quickly time has passed since the birth of our child. Alexia grows up so fast!
To celebrate Alexia's birthday, we decided to makeover her bedroom (again, ha!). Small children's rooms can be a challenge when it comes to decorating.
I had the vision of the room being colorful and says more about Alexia’s personality than projecting my own idea of design and beauty into it. And at the same time it has to be easy to change and adapt through time so it can grow with Alexia. It took three straight weeks of hardworking to complete this. The makeover that I spent the most time, work and effort in ever!
Phòng An rộng 10m2 với kích thước là 4,2 x 2,4m. Khi dọn về đây gần 4 năm trước, phòng An là phòng dành cho bạn tới chơi ngủ lại. Khi con chào đời cho tới nay, phòng An đã được sửa cũng kha khá lần. Phần nhiều là trang trí thêm nho nhỏ như vẽ cửa, dán tường chứ chưa thay đổi hoàn toàn bao giờ.

Alexia’s bedroom is 10 square meters big with the dimensions of 4.2 x 2.4 meters. When we moved in here nearly 4 years ago, this room was the room for friends to come and sleep over. When Alexia was born, this room has been decorated and redecorated quite a few times. Most of them are just adding small decorations such as door painting, cute wall stickers, but never went through a complete change.

1. Dọn dẹp và vẽ giường tủ.
Giường Brimnes của Ikea - 90x200cm, có thể kéo ra được thành giường đôi 180x200cm. Giường tuy đã cũ và nhiều vết trầy xước nhưng chất lượng vẫn còn tốt. Thay giường mới sẽ hơi phí phạm và hầu hết giường của trẻ con là giường đơn hoặc to nhất là 120x200cm. Mình muốn giữ giường to để phòng khi con ốm, cần trông con và ngủ cùng để theo dõi thì có thể ngủ lại phòng con. Bố mẹ sẽ thay phiên nhau và người còn lại sẽ không bị mệt hay mất ngủ.
Tuy không thích dáng của giường vì hơi thô nhưng mình nghĩ sau khi vẽ xong sẽ là một điểm nhấn đặc biệt và nhìn cũng sẽ rất vintage!
1. Cleaning up and sketching the bed’s painting
Ikea Brimnes bed has dimensions of 90x200cm and can be pulled out into a double bed with dimensions of 180x200cm. This bed is quite old and has many scratches but the built quality is actually still good. Buying a new bed is a wasteful and most kids' beds sold are single bed or as big as 120x200cm. That is too big for this room. But at the same time I want to keep a double bed so that when Alexia is sick might require me or my hubby to sleep nearby - we can pull the bed out and the other will not get tired or sleepless.
Although I don't like the shape of the bed because it's a bit rough, but I think the drawing will make it the highlight of the room and turn it into something very vintage!
Bộ tủ quần áo và tủ ngăn kéo Brusali:
Tủ ngăn kéo là nơi mình dùng để đựng bỉm, quần áo body và ở nhà cho con, mặt bàn đóng thêm là nơi thay bỉm. Bạn An đã bỏ bỉm được gần nửa năm rồi nên những vật dụng này không còn cần thiết nữa. Tủ ngăn kéo bị xước nhiều ở hai bên cạnh, bán đi không còn được giá nên mình giữ lại, xếp cạnh giường để vẽ và làm nơi đựng đồ chơi cho con.
Tủ quần áo thì mình bán lại vì còn khá mới. Tủ nhìn bên ngoài thì to nhưng thiết kế bên trong không thông minh khiến không để được nhiều đồ - giữ lại sẽ rất tốn chỗ.
Brusali wardrobe and dresser:
The dresser is where I used to store diapers, baby bodys and home clothing for Alexia, and the table top was bought separate - a place to change diapers. Alexia was out of diapers for almost half a year, so these items are no longer needed. The dresser also have so many scratches on both sides, so It’s not worth selling, so I decided to keep it and move it to the bed to store Alexia’s toys.
We sold the Brusali wardrobe because it was still quite new. It look big from outside, but the design is terrible so it doesn't store much stuff - keeping would take a lot of space.
Mình đã có ý tưởng vẽ như thế nào và tông màu ra sao từ rất lâu rồi nhưng do không tự tin vào việc vẽ lắm nên hơi chần chừ một chút. Sau đó mình đã gọi một đứa em chơi thân đến vẽ cùng. Hồi năm ngoái bắt đầu tập tành màu nước thì mình cũng “bắt” em tới dạy haha :D Lần này em đến được gần 2 ngày thôi nhưng dù gì cũng thấy tự tin hơn hẳn khi có người hỗ trợ! Cảm ơn D đã cùng chị vẽ nhá ;)
An rất thích chạy nhảy ngoài cánh đồng, đếm bò cừu dê, thích nhìn cối xay gió,… nên vẽ xung quanh những thứ này thôi :D
Vẽ phác thảo trên giấy và máy trước, sau đó vẽ phác sơ qua bằng bút chì trên giường tủ.
Đồ của Ikea hầu hết là gỗ ép, để đỡ mất công mài và sơn lớp lót thì mình dùng Chalk Paint để sơn thẳng trực tiếp lên. Chalk paint cũng là loại sơn mình dùng để sơn tủ bếp. Hãng mình sử dụng vẫn là Annie Sloan.
Tiếp đến thì pha sơn. Mình cần hai màu chính là ghi (ngả xanh blue) cho bầu trời và xanh lá cây cho cánh đồng.
Màu trời mình pha từ màu Loius Blue, Pure White và chút màu đen. Còn cánh đồng thì Amsterdam Green, Pure White và xíu vàng. Màu Amsterdam Green mua lọ 1L mà chỉ dùng mất có một xíu nên khá tiếc. Với giường tủ như của mình thì chỉ cần khoảng 200ml thôi vì pha với màu trắng là chủ yếu.
Từ hai màu chính này thì pha thêm ra các tông nhạt hơn bằng cách pha thêm màu Old hoặc Pure White đều được.
Cũng giống là sơn bình thường, “vẽ” cũng cần hai lớp thì màu sơn mới đều và bám vào đồ nhé. Bầu trời, cánh đồng và núi giống như các lớp base, cần được sơn hai lần. Mây, nhà cửa, cây cối, cừu,… thì chỉ cần một lớp thôi!
Lưu ý chờ thật khô giữa các lớp sơn, tránh sơn một cách vội vã, làm giảm chất lượng của “bức vẽ” xuống nhé!
I have had an idea of how to draw and what color to use a long time ago, but since I am not confident in painting, especially with chalk paint, I was a bit hesitant. I decided to call and ask my good bro D (he’s an architect) to paint with me. Last year when I started learning watercolor, I also "forced" him to teach me haha :D
We only had one day since his schedule is tight (I bet some of you as architects can relate lol) but you know, the feeling of having confidence boosted when someone got your back incase you mess up! Thank you D for your big help ;)
Alexia especially loves to run around the meadows, count cows and sheep, like to look at windmills... so the painting should focus around these things.
We drew sketches on paper and computer first, then sketched briefly with pencil on the bed & dresser.
Ikea's furnitures are mostly made of plywood, so to save the effort of grinding and priming, I used Chalk Paint to paint them directly. Chalk paint was also the paint I used to paint the kitchen cabinets.
Next step, mix the paint. I need two main colors: gray (bluish blue) for the sky and green for the meadow.
My sky color is mixed with Loius Blue, Pure White and some black. And the meadows are coming from Amsterdam Green, Pure White and just a touch of yellow. From these two main colors, I created different lighter tones to bring depth into the painting by adding Old or Pure White colors.
Just like normal painting furniture, you also need two layers to make it look evenly and last longer. The sky, meadows and mountains are base layers, and they need to be painted twice. Clouds, houses, trees, sheep, other small details… just one layer is enough!
Note: you have to wait for the paint to dry before putting the next layer on top of it. Like people said, you have to slow down to move fast. Avoid painting in a hurry otherwise you will end up with muddy and blotchy color layers!
Sau khi hoàn thành thì ta tiến hành wax. Bước này ở lần sửa bếp mình chưa nói kĩ nên bài này mình viết thêm sâu hơn. Wax cực kì quan trọng khi dùng Chalk Paint, nhất là với đồ gỗ ép hay gỗ công nghiệp MDF, lớp “giấy” bọc trên bề mặt gỗ có phủ Melamine để chống thấm, mối mọt dễ lau chùi nên về bản chất thì lớp này không phải là gỗ, khi sơn khó có thể bám được màu. Chalk Paint có ưu điểm là không cần mài lớp Melamine này đi cũng có thể sơn trực tiếp và bám lại trên bề mặt. Tuy nhiên nếu chỉ sơn không thì chưa đủ, lớp sơn này nếu không wax, khi bạn dùng khăn hoặc cọ ướt lau mạnh nhiều lần thì lớp sơn này sẽ trôi đi.
Wax còn gọi là sáp, lớp sáp này thì dùng cọ hoặc khăn mịn thấm đều lên bề mặt sơn, chúng sẽ bám vào lớp sơn và giúp lớp sơn bám chặt vào bề mặt của đồ nội thất. Wax cũng như sơn, đều cần phải làm hai hay thậm chí ba lần nếu bạn kĩ tính, chú ý wax kĩ những chỗ dễ bong sơn như các góc cạnh, tay nắm cửa… Thời gian để lớp wax khô hoàn toàn là 24 tiếng. Theo chỉ dẫn của Annie Sloan thì tùy vào nhiệt độ phòng, quá trình để lớp sáp này trở nên hoàn hảo, bảo vệ đồ nội thất là từ 5-21 ngày. Mình để phòng trống 1 tuần để lớp wax bay hết mùi và hoàn thành tốt công dụng của chúng.
After finished painting, we had to apply wax. I didn’t talk much about waxing when renovating the kitchen so in this blogpost I will write some more in depth.
Wax is extremely important when using Chalk Paint, especially with laminate or MDF industrial wood. The layer of "paper" wrapped on the wood surface is coated with Melamine to make it waterproof and more durable against termites. Also they are far more easy to clean than wood, so technical speaking this layer is not wood, hence more difficult to paint. Chalk Paint has the advantage over normal paint that even without grinding this Melamine layer can still be painted directly and the chalk paint still stick to the wood surface. However, If the paint is not waxed, when you wipe vigorously with a towel or wet brush many times, the paint will wash away. Also it will be more vulnerable to scratch and dirt.
This wax layer is used by a brush or a fine towel to penetrate the paint surface and help the paint stick better to the surface of the furniture. Wax as well as paint, need to be done in two or even three rounds if you are more on the careful side. Remember to pay close attention to wax more on the sensitive areas like corners, door handles... The sufficient time for the wax to dry completely is 24 hours. According to the instructions of Annie Sloan, depending on room temperature, in order for this wax layer becomes 100% perfect, you need to let it cure for 5-21 days. I left the room empty for a week! Alexia slept in our room with us during that time.
2. Sơn tường
Vốn mình định để tường màu trắng như cũ nhưng vào sinh nhật, hỏi thì An có nói thích màu hồng. Dẫn con đi chọn màu thì màu con chọn khi về nhà lại thành hơi cam một chút, không được hợp với tông đồ đạc lắm nên mình pha thêm chút đỏ và trắng để ra được màu hồng nhạt.
2. Painting the wall
I originally intended to leave the wall white as before, but on her birthday, An said she liked pink wall! I took her to the hardware store nearby to let het choose the color. It was a tad too orangeish and not really goes well with with the furniture tone, so we mixed it with a little red and white to get a light pink color.
3. Hệ thống tủ quần áo, giá sách và ghế ngồi.
Phía bên tường này dài 2m4, mình sẽ kết hợp tủ quần áo, giá sách và một chiếc ghế ngồi lại thành một khối liền, tạo cảm giác âm tường, giúp phòng cảm giác rộng rãi hơn.
Thay tủ quần áo cũ bằng tủ PAX - 58x100x236cm, vừa có nhiều chỗ hơn lại đựng được nhiều đồ hơn. Phòng chúng mình cũng dùng tủ quần áo dạng PAX này nên thấy cực kì tiện lợi vì có thể tự thiết kế theo ý thích riêng của mình. Mã tủ của An mình lưu lại trong PAX Planer cho bạn nào cần mua giống:
Vì không tìm được giá sách có kích thước phù hợp với tủ quần áo, cũng khá ngại việc tự làm nên mình mua lại tủ Billy cũ, cũng của Ikea cưa cho đúng kích thước mình cần: 40x 58cmx236cm. Tủ này nguyên gốc có chiều rộng 80cm nên mình cưa hết tất cả các thanh ngang xuống còn 58cm, khoan lại các lỗ cần thiết ở các mối nối.
Ghế ngồi thì mình tự đóng, cũng do không tìm được kích thước phù hợp. Bạn nào ở Đức thì có thể tìm mua Truhenbank nếu ngại tự đóng.
3. Built-in system: wardrobe, bookshelves and storage bench.
This side of the wall is 2m4 long, I will combine the wardrobe, bookshelf and a storage bench together into a smooth, seamless block, creating a sense of closet inside the wall, making the room feel more spacious.
I sold the old wardrobe and replaced it with a PAX wardrobe - 58x100x236cm, smaller and at the same time having more room for her stuff. Our bedroom also uses a PAX wardrobe, so I find PAX extremely convenient because we can design it to our own liking. My design code in PAX Planer if you want to use it: 9NH3J7
Because I could not find a bookshelf with the right size to fit the the PAX’s depth, so I bought old Billy bookshelves, and cut them down to the right size: 40x 58cmx236cm. This original shelves were 80cm wide, so I saw all the horizontal bars down to 58cm then drilled all the necessary joints back.
I also DIY’ed the storage bench, also because it’s not easy to buy one with the right size. If you are in Germany you can buy Truhenbank if you don’t want to make one yourself.
4. Sơn khu vực Built-in
Ban đầu mình tưởng tượng ra màu xanh mint rất đẹp, mình có test thử một góc tủ thì thấy cũng khá được. Tuy nhiên đến khi sơn kín hết thì màu xanh bị nhờ nhờ, một phần do ánh sáng vì ở trong góc tường xa cửa sổ nên ánh sáng không chiếu vào được. Và thứ hai là không ăn nhập gì với những phần còn lại của phòng.
Sau vài ngày suy nghĩ thì mình làm thêm gờ trang trí ở cửa tủ quần áo, để tăng điểm nhấn, khu vực built-in sẽ đỡ bị phẳng, nhàm chán. Và thay màu sơn khác. Mình chọn màu ghi có ngả chút xanh trời. Màu này mình pha từ màu Loius Blue với màu đen và màu Old White. Sơn hai lần và wax cũng hai lần nhé!
4. Painting the built-in area
I imagined in my mind a very beautiful mint color and tested on a small corner of the wardrobe - it looked quite promising. However, when we finished the painting completely, the mint color looked so fade and subdued and boring, partly due to the lighting because the built-in is in the corner of the room, far from the window, plus it’s almost winter so the sun is so low there is no sunlight coming through Alexia’s room. And secondly it didn’t go too well with the rest of the room as I thought.
After a few days of thinking, I decided to add moulding to the wardrobe’s front to add some textures so the built-in area will look less flat and boring. And eventually, re-painted it using another color. I chose the gray color with a little touch of blue. This color was mixed from Loius Blue with black and Old White. Painted twice and waxed twice!

I added two more celling lights above the built-in area so she can read her books on the bench. Flower lamp shades made from washi paper. This idea belongs to Sachie Muramatsu.
