The Art of Journaling: A Habit to Enrich my Life

Art journaling is a form of creative journaling that involves using different art materials to create visual journal pages, is for me a particularly enriching and therapeutic activity.

It allows us to combine the benefits of creative expression with the benefits of journaling, and it can be a fun and rewarding way to explore our inner thoughts and feelings, process our emotions, and document our personal growth.

Some people find it helpful to write in their journal every day, while others prefer to write less frequently.

Some people like to work with a wide range of materials and incorporate many different elements into their pages, while others prefer to focus on a few key materials and techniques. It can be helpful to try out different approaches and see what feels most natural and enjoyable for you.

Here are a few ideas for experimenting with art journaling:

  • Try using different media, such as paints, markers, collage materials, souvenirs from the trip or even digital tools like graphic design software.

  • Experiment with different styles and techniques, such as loose, expressive brushstrokes, precise lines, or a combination of both.

  • Play around with layout and composition - try placing elements in different areas of the page, or try using different types of pages (e.g. grids, circles, etc.)

  • Incorporate text into your pages - you could add words or phrases that reflect your thoughts and feelings, or use text as a design element.

  • Don't be afraid to make mistakes or try something new - there’s no right way to journal.

After each trip, I journal to preserve my memories of the people, places we encountered along the way. To show gratitude in our day-to-day life and find the beauty in the little things.
It can be a fun way to look back on our adventures years later, especially for Alexia when she grows up.

The act of creating art can be very meditative and calming, which help me to reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Many other people find that art journaling is a helpful way to process and cope with difficult emotions, such as grief, anxiety, or trauma. It can also be a way to celebrate and document our positive experiences in life.

It's common to feel challenged when starting any new activity, and art journaling is no exception. Some people may feel intimidated by the idea of creating art, or they may struggle with finding the time or motivation to get started. Here are my few tips that may help you overcome these challenges:

  • Set aside a regular time to work on your art journal. This could be a few minutes each day, or longer sessions a few times a week. Consistency can help you build momentum and get into a creative flow.

  • Don't worry about being perfect or making "good" art. Art journaling is about self-expression, not about creating finished, polished pieces. Embrace the process and have fun with it!

  • Find inspiration from other artists. There are many resources available online, such as art journaling blogs, Instagram accounts, or YouTube channels, that can give you ideas and inspiration for your own pages.

  • Start small and build up gradually. If you're feeling overwhelmed, try doing simple, quick exercises to get started, such as doodling, making a list of words or phrases that are meaningful to you, or creating a collage with magazine clippings. As you get more comfortable, you can try more complex techniques or add more elements to your pages.

  • Don't be afraid to try new things and experiment.

It's important to remember that your journal is for you and you alone, so you can create whatever you like without fear of judgment.
