How to deal with stress and feel better

We all experience stress at some point.

Although it’s a natural reaction, stress is still a negative force that can have a serious impact on our lives.

We may not get rid of it altogether, but we can learn to move through it rather than allowing it to stop us from living our life.

Identity our stress triggers

First things first, what exactly stresses us out? While we’re not going to be able to eliminate every stress trigger in our life, we can at least remove the ones that we have influence over. Big cities worsen my anxiety and because we're both self-employed and have the freedom to work from home, we have decided to move to the countryside.

Take a walk
Getting out of the stressful environment and into the sun, breathing the fresh air, and feeling our body move is a natural stress-relief. The best thing about walking is that we can do it anywhere and it costs nothing. But of course a beautiful scenery is a bonus ;) Take the time, reconnect with our physical body, observe the environment around us; enjoy the trees, flowers, birds, gardens, sky...

Immerse ourselves in creative activities
Whenever I'm stressed out, I often find myself doing something creative that I enjoy: cooking, baking, journaling, DIY, taking photos, planning ideas, learning new music instruments, knitting... Many of you have asked where do I learn those things - Skillshare is a great place to start!
There are 26000 specific courses to choose from, so you can learn very precise skills quickly, easily and in small doses.

Creativity doesn't have to be anything complicated or fancy. Because when we succeed at creating something, no matter what it is, our brain is flooded with dopamine, that feel-good chemical that actually helps boosting our mood.

Have a support person
Human are hard-wired for human connection — especially in times of stress. I couldn't ask for a better partner. He's not just my lover but also my best friend. We're lucky to have each other who is willing to listen and give each other the emotional support we need. We can talk and share about everything in our life, and for that I'm so grateful.

Be in the moment with our senses
Sight, smell, sound, and taste — you'll be amazed how quickly the stress goes away when you focus on just one of them. Eat something we crave, focus on each bite. Close our eyes and hear our favorite song while doing nothing. Light a scented candle and breathe in our favorite scent. Touch our favorite human being. Watch a movie we love. Remember, be patient with ourselves.

Cleaning & Organizing the house

Clutter and disorganization cause chaos and stress in me. Cleaning frees me from thinking and helps clearing my mind. And somehow the repetitive motion of it is for me some sorts of meditation. It is the art of cultivating the mind, not just removing dirt: a stark contrast to the idea that dealing with filth is polluting. A buddhist monk named Matsumoto explained that ultimately the goal of cleaning was cleaning. Nothing more. “There is no end to cleaning,” he said. “You sweep away a leaf and another one falls to take its place. That’s just fine. There is no difference between the process and the goal.”

Be kind to ourselves

“To love oneself,” wrote Oscar Wilde, “is the beginning of a life-long romance.”
As is the tale of every love story, times will bring both sun and storm, testing our deepest intentions on how we relate to ourselves.
On a good day, it's easy.
But when we fall, we blame and shame ourselves for our pain.

Forgive ourselves. We all mess up. It's okay to be stressed. It's okay to be not functioning for a while. It does not define who we are as a person. Take a good care of ourselves, both physically and mentally.
