Creating Comfort in Your Home

As the colder months approach and we spend more time inside our home, more people are looking for how to make a house look cozy to enjoy the colder weather. Today I want to share my tips to create comfort in our home.

  1. Use soft, natural materials

The tactile feeling of soft materials can instantly soothe our mind. When selecting textiles I usually choose natural fibres. Synthetic or shiny materials don’t really evoke the same sense of comfort as natural materials. Cotton, linens and wools are natural choices and feel soft to the touch.

2. LIGHTING IS KEY

Good lighting is essential to create an atmosphere of warmth and coziness. Walk through your home and think about the mood you want to create and the light that is required or is missing. Ceiling lights are great for darker days but but being too bright can kill the mood instantly. You may need to dim or even switch it off when relaxing by the fire or TV. Add different kind of lights at different heights in different corners to create more depth for the room. It could be table lamp, wall light, floor lamp, bedside lamp…

When it comes to making our home comfortable and inviting, I still love natural light the most. But I do understand that most of the time, it’s out of our control. This house is a rental and luckily it has so so many windows! Natural light makes any room feel prominent and brighter, and it helps you create the perfect mood for any occasion.

3. Include plants or flowers to our home decor

Plants, flowers, and other greenery are great for adding life to our space because they can brighten our mood and relieve stress. Many leafy plants help purifying indoor air as well. There really isn't any other design element like them, and they bring out the best in every interior.

Different plants have different habits so choose plants suitable for the area you are decorating and position them in places where they will thrive.

There are many places that work great with small plants, from shelves and windowsills and even hanging from the ceiling.

I don’t like the jungle look when adding too many types of plants at once, just a few carefully positioned can be enough to elevate a space. Using plants architecturally as part of a design scheme can instantly transform any space - that’s why I love large indoor plants to create a focal point: fiddle leaf fig, bird of paradise, money tree…

If there is not enough light in your home for fresh flowers/plants to thrive, maybe try dry flowers?

4. Choose the right paint color

Paint is the quickest and most effective way to add instant impact, change the mood and atmosphere of a room. Colors that create a sense of nostalgia create a sense of wellbeing, as do colors connected to nature.

Color is so closely tied to emotion and can be incredibly nurturing when you are searching for moments of comfort. Match the color of your furnitures, to the feeling you want in the room. What colors makes a room bigger/cozier? Exploring using different colors in the same room.

5. Be inspired by nature

Being in nature evokes a sense of quietness and calm. Inspiration from nature will always make you feel grounded. So look around you and see what you are drawn to.

Don’t just consider the colours but also the shapes, the lines. Patterns with natural relaxed feel and soft flowing lines will be easier to our eyes. Harder geometric patterns or busy bold prints tend to feel less relaxing particularly in bedrooms.

6. Get the right furniture for each space

The right furniture can make or break your space. Your home is where you can be yourself, relax, and be comfortable. Don’t follow trend or what other people find cool. You want to create a place that reflects who you are and what makes you ecstatic.

Arranging furniture can be a daunting design decision, but the layout is crucial to a room's comfort and function. Here are my tips.
- Make sure to measure the space carefully.
- Before you start shopping for furniture, think about how you will use the room. Do we really need this and that? Does it go well with the space? Don’t buy something just because it looks beautiful or cheap.
- Plan a lot of storage, especially in living room, kitchen, kid’s playroom.
- Furniture should complement your space, not overpower it.
- Arranging furniture and lighting goes hand in hand. For instance, food preparation areas need to be well-lit when cooking dinner. However, your dining table may be close by, and you might want to create a more relaxed mood while eating dinner. This is where task lights are used strategically to give you control over how you utilise each room.

7. Carpet/rug is a key piece of decoration for coziness

This season, we learn to slow down to appreciate the sweetness of life, and (re)discover the importance of home: a place of refuge filled with memories and moments spent with our families and loved ones.

Layering rugs on a hard floor is a wonderful way of bringing even more warmth, texture, and vibrancy into a space.

A wool rug will bring softness to the bedroom.

For the living room a jute carpet is just perfect.

Jute is durable and long-lasting which is suitable for a room with lots of activities.
Though it is a natural fiber, it is pretty soft.

You can let your kids play on it without irritating their soft skin.

Also, unlike other natural fibers like sisal, jute won’t scratch the hardwood floor.

It asks for very low maintenance and is easy to clean.

The places we spend the most time in have a huge impact on our mind. That's why since the pandemic, makeover vlogs on YouTube have become so popular.

Lots of people have been remaking their homes to become more cozy, more calming and more efficient. In other words, we’re creating spaces where we really want to be.
I hope this vlog is helpful.
